Many drivers regard auto repair with a great deal of caution and trepidation, and for good reason. For too many years, auto repair has been a “let the buyer beware” proposition, with shady operators who brought “flexible ethics” to their auto repair work. That’s why it’s a good idea to be informed before you turn your car over to any auto repair shop. These are all some good questions to ask:
· Can you work on my make & model of vehicle? This one might seem like an odd question, but it isn’t really. Most shops can work on Ford, GM and Chrysler products as well as many Japanese and Korean makes. Not every shop, however, is good with a BMW, a Benz, a Volvo or an Italian make, and that’s why there are specialty shops for those makes.
· What kind of parts do you use? When it comes to aftermarket replacement parts, not all parts are the same. Your vehicle deserves OEM-quality parts, and any good shop should show you the failed part after the job is completed.
· What’s it going to cost, and can I get an itemized bill? This will help you avoid any hidden charges that a shop might try to sneak in.
· What kind of warranty can you offer? Self-explanatory. Make sure you find out about coverage for replacement parts and workmanship both.
· Is your shop ASE/ASA certified? Automotive Service Excellence and Automotive Service Association are both organizations that set the bar for service standards for shops and technicians both. Certifications from either group is a good sign.
· What would you do if it were your vehicle? This is one you might ask if you are still a little bit in doubt. It tends to catch a technician or service writer off-guard, and you should go with your gut feeling and intuition as to how the technician responds to that question.
