Get Your Kids Back to College in a Reliable Car

posted on
College Auto Repair in Roanoke, VABefore you know it, it’s going to be time for your kids to be headed off for fall semester of college. While 18- and 19-year-olds have all kinds of smarts, they might not always be very well-versed in taking care of a car. Often, college students don’t do a lot of driving, except for their trips home…but here are some ideas to make sure that your student’s car is one less thing for you to worry about.
  • Before that student heads off to school, have the oil changed and the tires rotate and balanced. Make sure that there’s a sticker on the windshield with the date and mileage for the next oil change, and remind him/her to have the oil changed and tires rotated when the odometer hits that reading.
  • Make sure your kid knows how to check oil and transmission fluid; even though that shouldn’t typically be much of a problem for a good vehicle, it’s an important thing to know.
  • Underinflated tires are a problem; they make a vehicle handle poorly, they wear unevenly, hurt fuel economy and can overheat and even fail on long trips. Make sure your college student knows that, and knows how to use a tire gauge to check inflation before starting on a trip back home. Get a look at the tread depth and condition too, while you’re at it.
  • If your student is headed off to a university in an area that has harsh winters, make sure the car is fully prepped for winter. That means a fresh pair of windshield wipers, a recent cooling system flush, belts and hoses that are in good condition and battery posts cables that are free of corrosion.
  • Make sure the car is well-equipped with a trouble bag. That means highway flares, a pair of jumper cables, a good flashlight, blankets and snacks and a first-aid kit. While you’re in the trunk, get a look at the spare tire and make sure it’s inflated and in good condition. Spares tend to degrade and dry-rot, since they usually go for long periods without being used.
If you follow all these tips and make sure your college-bound student is up to speed on them as well, you can have a measure of peace of mind for your empty-nest years. If you’ve got any doubts or feel you might need a little more in-depth auto repair and maintenance, set up an appointment with us at Star City Tire & Battery Service in Roanoke, VA and we’ll make sure your student is road-ready!
